A lovely dinner at home does not have to begin with a complicated recipe. It can begin with the pasta you already know how to make, a bowl of greens, and enough room at the table to put your phone away.

The meal itself can stay familiar. A few thoughtful finishing touches give the evening its own mood.

Give the plate a little contrast.

With something rich and comforting, try something fresh alongside it: peppery leaves, a squeeze of lemon, or a handful of herbs. If everything on the plate is soft, a little crunch can be welcome. Think of toasted breadcrumbs over pasta or sliced radishes in a salad. Choose what suits the food you are already making.

Bring dinner to the table.

Put the salad in a bowl you enjoy using. Set out the bread on a board. Give everyone a place to sit, even if dinner is leftovers and there are only two of you. A serving dish is an invitation to share, and passing it around gives the meal a different pace.

Finish with something small.

A few squares of chocolate, some fruit, or a cup of tea can be enough. Dessert does not need to become a second project. The point is simply to leave a little room at the end of dinner for the people who are there.
