The best part of having people over is the moment everyone settles in. Someone is pouring water, someone is telling a story, and the room feels a little fuller than it did an hour ago.

You do not have to earn that moment with an elaborate menu. You can make room for it with a few considerate choices.

Cook something familiar.

Choose a dish you have made before and enjoy eating yourself. Ask about dietary needs before settling on the food. A familiar main, something fresh beside it, and a simple finish leave you more time to sit down with your guests.

Make the table easy to share.

Keep flowers low enough to see across. Leave space for the serving dishes. Put water where people can reach it. Use the plates and glasses you have; a mix can feel personal when the table is comfortable to sit around.

Give yourself permission to join in.

Bring out what you can before everyone arrives, then let some of the small things wait. Your guests came to see you. The dishes can have their turn after the conversation, and dinner can end with fruit or something picked up from the bakery.
