Begin with the spot you actually use.
Take the corner where you drink your coffee, read a few pages, or sit down at the end of the evening. Give that spot the attention you might usually save for the room guests see. Move the lamp closer. Put a coaster within reach. Bring over a cushion from another chair if it makes this one more comfortable.
Let your favorite things earn their place.
The small silver dish can hold the earrings you take off each night. A beautiful bowl can live beside the stove, ready for a lemon. Use the pieces you love where they fit your life, instead of keeping them in a cupboard for a more impressive occasion.
Leave a little breathing room.
You do not need a new object for every empty surface. Try moving a few things before adding anything. One generous bunch of flowers can feel more considered than several small decorations, and a clear place to set down a drink is its own kind of welcome.
